TEWU joins UG senior staff, FUSSAG strike

Members of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) in public and technical universities have joined the indefinite strike by the Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA- UoG) and the Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG).

That, it said, was as a result of a number of unresolved issues.

They include the non-implementation on the part of the Controller and Accountant General's Department (CAGD) to implement the negotiated and approved vehicle maintenance and off-campus allowances to its members even though an approval letter for implementation of such was issued by the Ministry of Finance to CAGD on August 2, 2024.

Promise

The other issue, it said, had to do with the unfulfilled promise by government to recalculate and pay members tier two interest that had accrued from the delayed payment of the tier two deductions to its Scheme from January 2010 to 2016.

“Failure on the part of government to regularly remit our tier two deductions to our scheme for our Fund Managers to effectively manage and guarantee enhanced pensions.

Currently, the government is owing our tier two deductions from January 2024 to date (eight months) even though, such deductions were made from our hard-earned salaries,” it said.

Resolve

“In view of the above issues, we have resolved to embark on an indefinite industrial action from Friday, September 20, 2024, until all the aforementioned outstanding issues are resolved,” it said.

The SSA-UoG declared a nationwide strike on Monday, September 16, 2024, in response to the government’s failure to meet their demands for improved working conditions.

A statement by the National Chairman, George Ansong, expressed frustration over the government's inability to honour previous agreements, citing several unresolved issues.

Among the key concerns is the government’s failure to implement new rates for Vehicle Maintenance and related allowances, despite prior commitments.

Additionally, the SSA-UoG noted that the government had not released Tier Two pension deductions to Fund Managers since January 2024 and had yet to recalculate interest on Tier Two pension funds from 2010 to 2016.
