After narrowly eliminating Niger 6-5 on penalties in the semi-finals, the Black Starlets of Ghana will seek to make history on Sunday as the first country to win the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations for the third time, when they clash with defending champions, Mali, at the Stade De L’Amitié Sino in Libreville.

The Starlets will face probably their toughest task yet in the tournament against Mali in the final to end an 18-year wait for the title after winning it twice in 1995 and 1999.

Premier League side, Tema Youth, have promised to inflict more pain on giants, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, and extend their winless streak on Sunday when they clash in a fierce Premier League second round opener at the Tema Stadium.

Ghana hero Emmanuel Toku was named Man of the Match in their semi-final win over Niger at the 2017 African U17 Championship yesterday.

Two-time winners, Ghana progressed into the Final of the Total U-17 Africa Cup of Nations Gabon 2017 following a dramatic 6-5 penalty shootout win over Niger at Stade de Port Gentil on Wednesday.

The match did not produce a goal in regulation time but it was the Black Starlets that got lucky in the end when Emmanuel Toku scored the decisive kick- after Niger’s Djibrilla Mossi saw his kick ricocheted off the bar.

Black Starlets offensive midfielder  Emmanuel Toku,  became the hero of the day as he courageously powered Ghana into the final of  the ongoing U-17 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon, with his incisive penalty kick that was to decide the winners between his side and Niger in their crunch semi-final encounter yesterday.

After failing to score in regulation time, and with  both Ghana and Niger at par during the penalty shoot out, it was Toku’s kick that gave his side a 6-5 win to qualify the team to Sunday’s final against defending champions, Mali.

Moments after his shot hit the back of the net after  Niger’s  goalkeeper, Abdoulaye Boubacar Adamu failed to make a touch,  both the players and officials of the Starlets poured on Toku in celebration.

It was indeed, a great joy and relief, given that  moments before, skipper Eric Ayiah  who is the tournament top scorer,  had failed to convert his kick when the Starlets were leading 3-2 in the shootout.

After a-two week break, the Ghana Premier League (GPL) resumes this weekend, with action at all centres and the exictement with which it ended the first round, likely to continue from where it left off.

The Black Starlets of Ghana have qualified for the finals of the 2017 CAF U-17 Nations Cup after edging Niger 6-5 on penalties today at the Stade de Port Gentil in Gabon.

The 25-year-old Ghana international spent last season on loan at St. James' Park, making 32 league appearances and scoring five goals as Rafa Benítez's side lifted the Sky Bet Championship title.

Kwesi Appiah will take charge of his first international friendly since his return when he leads the local-based Black Stars to face their Beninese counterparts on tomorrow at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The game will be Appiah's second of his latest stint as Black Stars coach which started on May 1.
