Absa Black Star Marathon: Boost for Para-athletes

The organisers of the 2025 Absa Black Star Marathon have announced a major boost for Ghana’s para-athletes, offering free transportation and one night’s accommodation for participants travelling from outside Accra to compete in the event.

In what is seen as a show of inclusion and support, the organisers said the gesture was aimed at removing key barriers faced by para-athletes, especially women, and encouraging greater participation in what is fast becoming one of Ghana’s most inclusive and impactful sporting events.

The announcement was made by Dr Eric Kwame Adae, CEO and founder of the Black Star Marathon Foundation, during a courtesy call on the President of the National Paralympic Committee (NPC), Samson Deen, at the NPC offices in Accra.

Dr Adae extended a personal invitation to the NPC boss to join the run and help lead the charge for disability inclusion.

Dr Adae also confirmed the inclusion of a 10km wheelchair race as a new addition to the event and expressed excitement about the over 60 para-athletes who have already registered, although he lamented the low number of women entrants.

Additionally, free registration codes have been made available for all para-athletes, media personnel and dignitaries, with organisers targeting a total of 10,000 participants for the event.
