Accra Poly dominates GHAPSA 2015

Accra Polytechnic has beaten nine other polytechnics to win the 2015 Ghana Polytechnic Sports Association (GHAPSA) games held at the Baba Yara Sports stadium in Kumasi.

The six-day event saw Accra Polytechnic sweep 20 gold, seven silver and six bronze medals to win, with Takoradi Polytechnic placing second with 14 gold, 17 silver and nine bronze medals.

Kumasi Polytechnic emerged third with six gold, six silver and four bronze medals.

The competition was held on the theme, “Promoting the co-existence of students and staff in the spirit of brotherliness and good sportsmanship”.

The teams at GHAPSA 2015 competed in disciplines such as Athletics, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Handball, Table Tennis, Tennis, Badminton and Taekwondo.

The Accra Polytechnic team won gold in events such as Women and Men’s Soccer, Women and Men’s Basketball, Women and Men’s Handball and Women’s Volleyball.

Other events in which the team won gold included Taekwondo, Women’s 100m, Women’s 200m, Women’s 4x100m, Men’s 800m, Men’s 1,500m and Men’s 5,000m.

In the specific case of Taekwondo, the team picked eight gold medals.

In other medallion category, Accra Polytechnic picked silver medals in the Women’s Shot Put, Women’s Discuss, Women’s Badminton and two silver medals in Taekwondo.

The team also won bronze in the Women’s 800m, 1,500m, Triple Jump and Women’s Long Jump events including two bronze medals in Taekwondo.

At a ceremony held Tuesday to celebrate Accra Poly’s performance, The Rector of the school, Prof. Sylvester Achio, commended the sports team for a brilliant showing.

He praised the team for having exhibited discipline in the run-up to winning the tournament, saying: “You cannot succeed without discipline.”

Prof. Achio urged the team not to relent, but to work hard to win the West African Polytechnic Games (WAPOGA), which the school will be hosting in May.
