Asante Kotoko honour late fan with victory

Asante Kotoko paid a heartfelt tribute to their late fan, Nana Pooley, with an emphatic 2-0 victory over Legon Cities at the Baba Yara Stadiumon Sunday, March 9, 2025.

The victory sees Kotoko reclaim the top spot in the Ghana Premier League, though they are level on points with Bibiani GoldStars, holding the advantage due to their superior head-to-head record.

Before kickoff, an emotional tribute was held in honour of Nana Pooley, with a minute’s silence observed and Kotoko players displaying a banner in his memory.

Despite a month-long break due to the league’s suspension following Pooley’s tragic death, Kotoko showed no signs of rust, controlling the game from the start.

They took the lead in the 29th minute through full-back Patrick Asiedu, who unleashed a stunning strike from the edge of the box, curling the ball into the bottom left corner beyond the reach of the Legon Cities goalkeeper.

Kotoko continued their dominance but had to wait until the 87th minute to seal the win. Striker Kwame Opoku won a penalty and confidently converted it, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to double their lead.

security arrangement

Asante Kotoko’s 2-0 victory over Legon Cities at the Baba Yara Stadium was marked not only by an emotional tribute to late fan Nana Pooley but also by heightened security measures and strict stadium restrictions.

A heavy security presence was deployed to ensure order, with several restrictions put in place for supporters. One of the key measures was the ban on sealed water bottles in the stands.

Fans were required to remove the lids of their bottles and dispose of them in designated bins before being allowed entry.

This decision by security personnel drew mixed reactions from fans, with many expressing concerns over the inconvenience.

Some supporters questioned the rationale behind the restriction, arguing that it disrupted their match-day experience.
