FC AshantiGold have been eliminated from the X1 Division One League (DOL) Super Cup despite ending their Group B campaign with a 2-0 victory over Tamale City at the Obuasi Len Clay Stadium last Saturday.
The Miners needed a strong result in their final group game to keep their semi-final hopes alive, and they delivered with a comfortable win.
Frederick Twumasi opened the scoring for AshantiGold in the 36th minute, registering the club's first goal of the competition.
Faroq then sealed the victory in the 89th minute with AshantiGold's second goal of the afternoon.
However, the victory could not secure qualification as AshantiGold finished the group stage with four points.
The two Group B matches were played simultaneously, with AshantiGold hosting Tamale City at Len Clay Stadium, while Nsuopon Fidelity faced Semper Fi at OforiKrom Park.
At OforiKrom Park, Semper Fi defeated Nsuopon Fidelity 1-0, with Francis Eshun scoring the only goal in the 49th minute.
The victory moved Semper Fi to the top of Group B with five points and secured their place in the semi-finals.
Nsuopon Fidelity finished second with four points and also advanced to the last four on goal difference, leaving AshantiGold out despite having the same number of points.
Tamale City finished bottom of the group with two points.
Semper Fi and Nsuopon Fidelity will therefore represent Group B in the semi-finals, while AshantiGold and Tamale City have brought their DOL Super Cup campaigns to an end.
For AshantiGold, the elimination will be a disappointing conclusion to a campaign in which they managed to secure their first victory and goals only in their final group match.
