Bernard Neequaye named 2022 Best Boxing Journalist
The Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) has honored Bernard Djanie Neequaye as the Best Boxing Journalist for the 2021–2022 review year, recognizing his exemplary contribution to the promotion and development of boxing in Ghana and beyond.
Neequaye, a senior sports journalist with the Graphic Communications Group Ltd (GCGL), earned the distinction following his extensive coverage of Team Ghana’s successful boxing campaign at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where the Black Bombers secured three of the nation’s five medals.
In a press release issued on November 13, 2022, the GBA praised Mr. Neequaye for his “in-depth reportage and splendid analysis” of Ghanaian boxing. The statement highlighted his long-standing weekly boxing column, “From The Ringside” in Graphic Sports, which consistently addresses critical issues such as boxers’ welfare, industry transparency, and the growth of the sport.

“Mr. Neequaye has elevated the sport of boxing through his commitment and professionalism. He has provided exclusive coverage of the Black Bombers’ preparations and exploits in Birmingham and has continually championed the cause of boxers through his weekly column,” the GBA noted.
The regulatory body further urged other sports journalists to emulate Neequaye’s dedication, commending him for investing his time and resources to promote Ghanaian boxing. The GBA emphasized that such contributions are vital to sustaining the sport’s legacy, which has produced global icons including Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, David Kotei, Nana Yaw Konadu, Joseph Agbeko, Joshua Clottey, Richard Commey, and Isaac Dogboe.
Team Ghana’s Birmingham 2022 Achievements
At the Birmingham Commonwealth Games, Team Ghana’s Black Bombers were the standout performers, securing three medals namely: Abraham Mensah – Silver (Bantamweight), Joseph Commey – Silver (Featherweight), and Abdul Wahid Omar – Bronze (Light Welterweight)
These victories accounted for more than half of Team Ghana’s total medal haul, which also included Joseph Paul Amoah’s bronze in athletics (200m) and Deborah Acquah’s bronze in the long jump.

Career Profile of Bernard Neequaye
Bernard Neequaye is a graduate of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) and began his career with GCGL in 2013 as a National Service personnel. Over nearly a decade, he has risen to become a respected authority in boxing journalism, recognized locally and internationally for his dedication to the sport.
For the past eight years, Mr Neequaye has used his weekly feature From The Ringside in GCGL’s Graphic Sports, as a major platform for discourse on Ghanaian and international boxing. Also, he earned accreditation from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and Commonwealth Sport to cover prestigious events such as the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon and the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
As a member of the GBA Media Committee (2017-2022), Mr Neequaye contributed to the local boxing industry’s governance, distinguishing himself as one of the foremost voices in African boxing journalism, using his platform to advocate for boxers’ welfare and spotlight Ghana’s enduring impact on the global boxing stage.
