The Regional Director of Sports, Mr Kweku Abaidoo Wilson, who made this known, said the situation is hampering serious sports development in the region.

Mr Wilson disclosed this when the newly-appointed Sports Minister, Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye, and the Central

Regional Minister, Mr Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, toured some sports facilities in Cape Coast. They included the old stadium, the Adisadel park and the new staduim.

Mr Wilson said even the retained five per cent from league proceeds meant for maintenance purposes “is sent to Accra, a situation which compounds the already bad situation.”

“We have a lot of potential in the region but we cannot unearth such talent because of poor economic reasons,” he stressed.

He, therefore, appealed to the minister to ensure that the five per cent proceeds was retained in the region to develop sports.

The minister, for his part, urged the sports authority in the region to evolve ways to generate revenue to develop the facilities.

That, he said, could be possible through Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) collaboration, adding that “there is the need to collaborate with them to create an industry out of our stadia.”

He commended the sports authority in the region for keeping the Cape Coast stadium clean and healthy.

Nii Vanderpuye said the world had moved from sponsoring sports and stressed the need for hard work and dedication

The Regional Minister, gave an assurance that he would do everything to support and improve sports in the region.
