Cameroun dash Queens’ Olympic dream

Cameroun’s Indomitable Lionesses have again cut short the Olympic dream of Ghana’s Black Queens after holding them to a 2-2 draw in the second leg of their second round qualifier at the Accra Stadium last Saturday.

Having played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Yaounde, the tie finished 3-3 on aggregate and thus the Camerounians edged out the Queens on better away goals.

Playing against Cameroun who are noted for their physical play was never going to be easy, but perhaps, the Queens also did not anticipate that they would be at the receiving end of unbalanced officiating from Gabonese referee Patricia Obiang Obone as her controversial decisions cost them, rather than being outplayed by their guests.

With an Olympic qualification at stake, the Queens knew they had to fight hard to beat the resilient Lionesses and deservedly took the lead on the 18th minute when Samira Sulemana finished off an error from goalkeeper Annette Ndom Ngo. Just before half time, the Camerounians equalised.

The Queens quickly recovered and took the lead again in the second half as Portia Boakye finished off a set piece by Sulemana and from then pushed hard for goals.

A momentarily loss of concentration by the Queens allowed substitute Agnes Nkada to squeeze in a goal, leaving the dejected Queens in tears.
