Cycling: Ministry backs inaugural Tour Du Ghana race

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation has pledged its full support for the maiden Tour Du Ghana, a multi-stage cycling race set to roll from November 13 to 24, 2025.

The assurance came from the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mrs Wilhelmina Asamoah, during a meeting last Thursday with a delegation from the Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF), led by its Secretary-General, Shaaban Mohammed.

The GCF briefed the ministry on the modalities and logistics for staging what is expected to be the biggest cycling event ever organised in Ghana.

To ensure a smooth and successful event, Mrs Asamoah announced that the ministry would liaise with the Ministry of Roads and Highways to repair and improve key sections of the route.

The ministry will also collaborate with the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and the GCF to ensure effective planning, safety, and organisation throughout the tour.

The race will cover three regions — Greater Accra, Volta, and Oti — and pass through prominent districts and towns including Ada, Aflao, Ho, Hohoe, Jasikan, Dambai, and Olebu (Ablekuma).

Mr Mohammed said the event would celebrate Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, while promoting what he described as the “Black Star Experience”, a unique blend of sport and national pride.

“We want to use the Tour Du Ghana to showcase Ghanaian culture and hospitality to the world,” he said. “Sponsors such as DOT Ateliers, Stanbic Bank, MTN, Prudential Life Insurance, Twellium Verna Water, Ada Plus Destination, Akwamu Kotoi State, TBH, DHL Global Forwarding, and the Ghana Olympic Committee have already confirmed their strong commitment to the event.”

He added that other major companies, including Toyota, Goil, Japan Motors, Total Energies, Strategic Africa Security, and Goodness Oil, were also in talks to join as sponsors.

According to Mr Mohammed, plans are underway for President John Dramani Mahama to officially flag off the race in Accra, an act that will lend prestige to the event’s historic launch. He appealed to the ministry to provide full institutional support to make Tour Du Ghana a landmark sporting spectacle.

In response, Mrs Asamoah commended the organisers for their initiative and directed the GCF to provide regular progress updates, assuring them of the ministry’s commitment to offering technical and logistical support to ensure the success of the event.

“This is an exciting development for Ghanaian sport,” Mrs Asamoah said. “The Tour Du Ghana has the potential to place Ghana firmly on the international cycling map.”
