Arsenal are among many of Europe's elite clubs to have discussed the prospect of signing the Gabon international who has scored 17 goals in 18 appearances this season.

Aubameyang has long been admired by Arsene Wenger who flirted with the prospect of signing the striker when he was at St Etienne but Dortmund were the club that took the chance.

Speculation was rife last Wednesday that Arsenal had made an offer after 26-year-old Aubameyang missed training.

He was not part of the squad that travelled to Dubai for their warm weather camp yesterday instead he had travelled to Abuja in Nigeria, with Dortmund's blessing, for the African CAF awards where he had been shortlisted.

Arsenal are reputed to have made an offer of £44.6m but Dortmund have refused to be drawn on reported bids, with club insiders saying it would take closer to £60m to tempt a sale.

Aubameyang extended his contract last summer to 2020 and has talked up a move to Spain where his mother is from. At this stage, Arsenal seem set to stick with the one January signing of Mohamed Elneny from Basle which will be completed by Monday at the latest owing to the processing of visa. DailyMail
