Gala in honour of Nana Gyamfi

The Retired National Footballers Association of Ghana (RENFAG) has announced December 5 as the date for a football gala which will be used to celebrate the life of the late football icon, Nana Gyamfi Kumi aka C.K. Gyamfi

According to Alhaji Ibrahim Sunday, the chairman of the RENFAG, the 20-team gala scheduled for the Accra Sports Stadium will afford Ghanaian fans the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to the man "responsible for Ghana's football success" ahead of his burial on December 11..

"The retired players are organising the match and it will comprise 20 teams just to celebrate what he has done for us," Alhaji Sunday disclosed last Thursday when members of the RENFAG accompanied family members of the former Black Stars player to the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

He continued, "The 20 teams will be comprised mostly of the players he coached, such as myself, Kofi Pare, Dan Owusu, among others. The game will be free of charge and we expect all Ghanaians, especially football fans to pay him the tribute he deserves."

The grandson of the late coach, Nana Kumi Gyamfi, in an interaction with the Sports Minister, Dr Ahmed Mustapha, said the family had tentatively decided to lay the football legend, known in private life as Charles Kumi Gyamfi, to rest on December 11 but were awaiting approval from the state since he was a national asset.

"The date, December 11 is a proposal since he belongs to the whole nation. We want to hand him over to the Ghanaian people on December 11 and take him back on December 12 for his final resting place in his village as per his last wishes."

He later presented the sports minister with two bottles of Schnapps in accordance with tradition.

The Minister, in his address called for closer collaboration between the family of Nana Kumi Gyamfi and the state in order for his burial to the celebration of a life well lived.

He also promised to set-up a meeting between the President, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, and the family of the three-time AFCON winner.
