Ghana beat Togo in rugby friendly
The national rugby team, the Black Eagles, beat their Togolese counterparts 17-0 in an international friendly at the Accra Sports Stadium last Saturday.
The game, which climaxed the 2015 Rugby Festival organised by the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), saw the Ghanaian team taking total control of the game, making it possible for them to win handsomely.
A first try by Michael Aquaye as well as a convention by Rabiu Mohammed gave the Ghanaians a comfortable 7-0 lead at the end of half time. After recess, Theophilus Opari scored a try and Rabiu Mohammed converted a penalty try to make it 17-0 to win the game for Ghana.
The festival, which drew a large crowd, saw various clubs drawn from the regions battling for honours in the seven-aside for both the males and females championships. The festival opened with a curtain-raiser between Cosmos Ladies and Titans Ladies from Legon, which ended 20-10 in favour of Cosmos.
Teams that competed in the men seven-aside were Griffons from Cape Coast, Cosmos Buffaloes, Dansoman Hurricanes, Legon Titans and Accra Sharks. Cosmos Buffaloes were crowned champions after beating Titans 22-7 in a game which was keenly-contested.
Speaking at the ceremony, Abdul Aziz Issah, General Secretary of GRFU, said the match, meant to prepare the teams for the upcoming Ghana Rugby Club Championship next month, was also meant to establish a relationship with Togo and assured to extend it to other West African countries.
