Ansah, Koomson in hot contest for GHALCA chairmanship

The contest for Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) chairmanship will be a straight fight between the Vice Chairman, John Ansah and Isaac Wilberforce Koomson as the GHALCA goes to the polls tomorrow.

Both men have for a long time played various roles in the GHALCA, and whoever wins the election will indicate the direction the club’s welfare body will take.

Mr Ansah is seen as having the support of the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kurt Okraku, while Mr Koomson, a former executive council member of the GHALCA, reportedly has the support of other members of the fraternity.

The chairmanship race will be the highlight of the election which is expected to choose new officers to run the affairs of the welfare body of clubs in Ghana following the expiration of the term of office of the Kudjoe Fiano-led administration.

The election, which was slated for yesterday, was rescheduled to tomorrow,  to allow the Election Committee to clear all outstanding issues with regards to the filing of nominations.

All set

In an interview with the Chairman of the Election Committee, Fred Pappoe, he said all issues had been cleared and all was set for them to proceed.

Mr Pappoe said the committee would coordinate all activities regarding the elections which would be supervised by the Electoral Commission as the Statutes of GHALCA stipulates.

The election will take place at the GHALCA Secretariat and all eligible voters, mainly representatives of the affiliated clubs, will be required to show up with their Ghana cards as their form of identification.

“Those eligible to vote are already aware and so we expect that they will show up with their ID cards to make for easy identification and make the process smooth.

“The Election Committee will coordinate and the Electoral Commission will supervise the elections which should be over by 3 p.m.,” Mr Pappoe told the Daily Graphic. 

Contenders

Aside from the contest for the Chairmanship, there are contenders for the vice chairmanship and Premier League Club representatives with the other slots having unopposed contestants.

Vice Chairman, Phyllis Marku and Nana Amankwaa Kwakye are contesting, the first time two women are contesting for this position, while the Men’s Premier League slot has Joseph Nkoo (Kumasi Asante Kotoko), Fred Tindan (Bibiani Goldstars) and Abdul Rahman Yakubu (Vision FC), contesting.

The unopposed contestants are the incumbent Treasurer, Patrick Martey Boye, who is seeking to be affirmed for the role for a second term, Division One League has Eric Opoku, also an incumbent as well as  Gabriel Godwin Kwao who is also an incumbent representing the regional clubs.

The Women’s Premier League slot will be taken by the Chief Executive of Prisons Ladies, ASP Naomi F. Abdulai, as she is contesting unopposed.
