Gold Stars reclaim league summit
Bibiani Gold Stars reclaimed the top spot on the Ghana Premier League log with a 2-1 victory over visiting Kpando Heart of Lions at the Bibiani Dun's Park yesterday.
Samuel Attah Kumi continued his impressive form, netting his eighth goal of the season in the 14th minute to ignite celebrations among the home fans.
Gold Stars doubled their lead three minutes before half-time when Gideon Anaba successfully converted a penalty after sustained pressure from the hosts forced Lions into a defensive error.
Despite trailing by two goals, Lions showed resilience and clawed their way back into the match in the 60th minute, thanks to a well-taken goal by Nana Kwame Oppong.
The visitors pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Gold Stars remained resolute in defence.
Lions, sitting third on the league table, had aimed to leapfrog their hosts with a victory.
However, their plans were disrupted early when Attah Kumi's goal put Gold Stars ahead.
The home side continued to mount pressure, but Lions' defensive duo of Emmanuel Abban and Ruben Hennessy worked tirelessly to keep them at bay.
Eventually, the persistent attacking waves of Gold Stars paid off when they earned a penalty, which Anaba calmly dispatched.
Lions emerged stronger in the second half, forcing Gold Stars into moments of desperate defending.
Their determination paid off when Oppong capitalised on an opportunity to reduce the deficit.
Medeama win derby
Meanwhile, Medeama SC staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Basake Holy Stars 2-1 in a thrilling Western Region derby at T&A Park in Tarkwa.
Holy Stars, considered underdogs in the encounter, stunned the home fans by taking the lead in the 28th minute through an impressive strike by Issa Yakobo.
However, Medeama’s Mamudu Kamaradin, recently invited to the Black Stars camp by Coach Otto Addo, proved his worth by scoring a crucial equaliser on the stroke of half-time.
The second half saw both teams battle intensely for the winning goal. Just as the match seemed destined for a draw, Medeama secured all three points deep into injury time with a decisive strike from Derrick Fordjour.
