Ghana Premier League: Heart of Lions tame Asante Kotoko
Heart of Lions secured a vital 1-0 win over Asante Kotoko at the Len Clay Stadium in Obuasi on Sunday, November 3.
The defeat was Kotoko's second consecutive loss of the season, as the lone goal by former Hearts of Oak striker, Kwadwo Obeng Jr., proved enough to secure three points for the visitors who showcased impressive resilience against one of the league’s powerhouses.
The match's decisive moment came in the 28th minute when Kotoko’s goalkeeper, Mohamed Camara, misjudged a clearance, and Obeng Jr. seized the opportunity to slot the ball into the open net with precision.
Lions’ first away win
The goal not only secured Lions' first away win of the season but also highlighted the tactical sharpness of Lions’ coach, Bashir Hayford, a former manager of Kotoko, who orchestrated a well-organised defensive display.
Kotoko, eager to rebound from their midweek defeat to Legon Cities, controlled the game with 62 per cent possession and created 10 shooting opportunities compared to Lions' 4. Despite their dominance, Kotoko managed only one shot on target. Lions’ defence held strong and frustrated Kotoko’s forwards, thwarting their efforts to find an equaliser.
The defeat dropped Kotoko from second to third on the league table, which has added pressure on them as they prepare for an away fixture against Bechem United.
Heart of Lions, buoyed by this morale-boosting victory, rose to seventh and will look to capitalise on their momentum in their next match against Berekum Chelsea.
