Ghana Premier League: Kotoko seek redemption against rampant Lions

Asante Kotoko will be chasing more than just three points when they welcome current Ghana Premier League leaders Heart of Lions to the Baba Yara Stadium tomorrow.

For the Porcupine Warriors, this fourtweek clash is about pride, history, and the chance to end a frustrating two-season wait for victory over their Kpando rivals.

Lions arrive in Kumasi unbeaten in three, brimming with confidence, and sitting atop the table.

They are not merely punching above their weight; their performances suggest an organised side capable of sustaining a strong campaign.

The 1-1 draw they earned here last season, followed by a narrow 1-0 victory in Kpando, cemented their growing dominance in this fixture. Kotoko, by contrast, have just one win in their last 10 meetings with the Lions, a record that speaks volumes about the shift in balance.

Nonwetheless, the Porcupine Warriors have won 10 of their last 11 home matches, a record which will give their faithful some comfort and hope.

The return of veteran tactician Bashir Hayford to Kumasi adds another intriguing subplot. A former Kotoko boss himself, Hayford knows the Baba Yara Stadium atmosphere well and will be eager to use his insight to plot another scalp.

His squad brims with attacking options—Paul Attah Agyei, Chauncy Freeman, Ishmael Addo, Michael Ephson and Macaulley Kojo Kume—who tore Eleven Wonders apart in their recent 4-1 victory. Energetic midfielder Etse Dogli, man-of-the-match in that game, is also expected to play a pivotal role.

Kotoko, however, enter tomorrow's contest buoyed by continental success. Their CAF Confederation Cup win over Nigeria’s Kwara United lifted spirits after a sluggish domestic start, where they’ve played just once and sit mid-table in 11th place.

Head Coach Abdul Karim Zito has vowed to make their Baba Yara Stadium a fortress, and victory against the league leaders would be the perfect statement of intent.

All eyes will be on Albert Amoah, in scintillating form, and Hubert Gyau, whose strike in Nigeria underlined his pedigree. Skipper Samba O’Neil, alongside Emmanuel Antwi, Joseph Ablorh and Morifing Donzo, will be tasked with balancing defensive stability and midfield control to neutralise Lions’ attacking firepower.

With Lions unbeaten and Kotoko desperate to reignite their domestic charge, this encounter is shaping up as one of the early thrillers of the season.

At the Tuba Astro Turf Park, Dreams FC and Vision FC will square off in a tricky showdown.  Still searching for their first win, Dreams will be determined to break their duck, but Vision’s strong start ensures a fiercely contested battle that could swing either way.

At the Golden City Park, Berekum Chelsea find themselves already under pressure. Rock bottom and without a win, the Blues host Basake Holy Stars in a fixture that has the feel of an early-season six-pointer. The visitors may be new to the top flight, but Chelsea’s sluggish start means they can ill-afford another slip, especially at home. Victory is vital to calm growing unease among supporters.

Debutants Hohoe United return to their backyard to face Karela United, hoping to rediscover the form that earned plaudits against Hearts of Oak on the opening day.

With passionate home support behind them at the Kpando Sports Stadium, the newcomers will look to turn the tide after recent setbacks.

Medeama SC’s clash with Nations FC at the T&A Park promises to be full of fireworks. Both sides thrive on attacking football, and this fixture could develop into an open contest highlighted by midfield battles and defensive organisation in what promises to be an end-to-end action.

Two-time champions Aduana FC face a stern test of their title aspirations when they travel to the Nsenkyire Sports Arena to meet former champions FC Samartex 1996.

While Aduana have signalled early ambition, they must prove their ability to grind out results away from home against a Samartex side hungry for their first win after back-to-back draws, and will be keen to use home advantage to break their duck.

Elsewhere, struggling Techiman Eleven Wonders host Young Apostles at the Swedru Sports Stadium in what could be a closely fought encounter.

This afternoon, Swedru All Blacks  host defending champions Bibiani Gold Stars at the Swedru Sports Stadium, with the visitors channelling all their energies into the domestic competition following their early exit from the CAF Champions League.
