THE Samreboi township will come alive tomorrow as FC Samartex 1990 attempt to halt Asante Kotoko’s momentum and reignite their own title charge in what promises to be a gripping showdown at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena.
The Porcupine Warriors, the most decorated club in Ghana Premier League history with 24 titles, sit fifth on the log with a game in hand.
They arrive in Samreboi unbeaten and determined, yet fully aware they are stepping into one of the league’s most unforgiving venues for visiting teams.
FC Samartex may not have replicated the ruthless edge that crowned them champions two seasons ago, but the Timber Giants have transformed the Nsenkyire Arena into a fortress.
Over the last three seasons, they have lost just three home matches and remain unbeaten so far, winning four of five fixtures on their turf.
However, their seventh-place standing — with eight goals scored and seven conceded in 10 games — reflects a team struggling to balance their defensive shape with attacking efficiency.
Nonetheless, Coach Christopher Ennin has protected the club’s home invincibility since taking charge late last season, amassing nine wins and four draws. Last weekend’s 0-2 defeat away to Bechem United will sting, but it may also sharpen their edge against the league’s aristocrats.
Much will depend on striker Emmanuel Mamah, their talisman of last season. With three goals in nine matches, he has not quite hit full stride, but he remains Samartex’s most potent weapon.
Kotoko, meanwhile, have been patchy on the road with two wins and two draws, but will take confidence from their 2-1 triumph at Samreboi three seasons ago. Since then, they have drawn once and lost once at the same venue, underlining the fine margins that usually define this fixture. Coach Abdul Karim Zito’s men arrive buoyed by a 2-1 win over Young Apostles on Wednesday and a hard-fought 1-1 draw with Aduana FC in Kumasi last Sunday.
Kotoko’s in-form striker Hubert Gyau and skipper Samba O’Neil will spearhead the attack, supported by the industrious Joseph Ablorh, Patrick Ansu, Patrick Asiedu, Saaka Dauda, Morifing Donzo and Samuel Tenedu as they attempt to leave Samreboi with their title ambitions intact.
The weekend’s action kicks off this afternoon at the Tarkwa and Aboso (T&A) Park, a venue that has become a graveyard for visiting sides, where leaders Medeama SC host Bechem United in a contest expected to draw significant attention.
Bechem’s form has been miserable, with just one win in eight matches, a slump that cost coach Stephen Desmond-Issah Botchway his job.
New boss Kwabena Amissah will seek a stabilising result after last weekend’s shock 2-0 win over Samartex. However, Medeama, sitting confidently at the summit, will be determined not to surrender ground in the title race.
Also today, Karela United welcome Basake Holy Stars to the Aliu Mahama Stadium in Tamale. The visitors have been dreadful away from home, losing four and drawing one, making the encounter a favourable one for Karela as they look to exploit that vulnerability.
Tomorrow, ninth-placed Vision FC host the in-form Kpando Heart of Lions at the Nii Adjei Kraku Sports Complex in Tema. Lions, breathing down Medeama’s neck, are eager to pounce on any slip and climb into top spot.
Aduana FC welcome Berekum Chelsea to the Nana Agyemang Badu Park in a fixture that often delivers fireworks, while Swedru All Blacks travel to the University of Ghana Sports Stadium to face Dreams FC — a side that has revived its season and is unbeaten in its last three matches.
In Wenchi, Young Apostles hope to inflict a second league defeat on Hearts of Oak, while Hohoe United are tipped to edge struggling Techiman Eleven Wonders at the Hohoe Sports Stadium. Nations FC round off the weekend’s fixtures with a home tie against Bibiani Gold Stars at the Kwame Kyei Sports Complex.
