Ghana to bid for AFCON 2017
Ghana has joined Algeria, Kenya and Tanzania to bid for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Mr Mahama Ayariga, Minister of Youth and Sports announcing this yesterday in Accra said the decision had the approval of President John Dramani Mahama.

The bid follows the withdrawal of Libya as the original host of the tournament slated for January 2017.
The minister noted that Ghana had the infrastructure including stadia, hospitality and excellent air travel facilities to host the tournament.
“As you are aware, Libya have withdrawn as hosts of AFCON 2017, so I sought permission from President John Dramani Mahama for Ghana to put in a bid.”
“The President gave his blessings and I believe Ghana stands in good stead to win the rights to host the tournament,” he said.
He expressed the hope that the bid would enable the nation to add to the existing stadia.
"Ghana already has some infrastructure but we are looking to add to it. We have projects such as the Cape Coast Stadium and we are going to construct a few more in other regions.”
“We have everything to be able to host the rest of Africa, so we will enter the bidding race with the conviction that we are the best country to host the rest of Africa,” the Minister stressed.
