By popular acclamation, the delegates at the GWF congress held at the Accra Sports Stadium also accepted the creation of a five-member Disciplinary Committee (DC) and the appointments of Ken Odeng Adade and Edith Owusu Agyapong as deputy general secretary and deputy treasurer respectively.

The president of the GWF, Ben Nunoo Mensah, who chaired the congress, explained that “The review of the existing constitution would place the ownership and power in the hands of all the stakeholders as against what pertained in the existing constitution, which places a lot of power and authority at the instance of the board and a few national team athletes.

“The new constitution will also give legal backing to the newly formed weightlifting clubs who will be the bedrock of Ghana weightlifting and the foundation of the sport in the country," he stressed.

The reviewed document also gives recognition to stakeholders like the newly formed Coaches Association, Retired Lifters Association, Technical Officials Association, Security Services, as well as expatriate communities involved in the promotion and development of the sport.

Five individuals with no links to the federation, Peter Zwennes (Chairman), Frederick Lartey Otu (Secretary), Stephen Bekoe (Ordinary member), Maurice Quansah (Ordinary member) and the Director of Sports at the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Seth Osei, were also appointed as DC members.

The congress which lasted for three hours also enodrsed a budget totalling GH¢1,484,226 for the federation's activities for the year.

It comprises a cedi component of GH¢ 136,200 and $338,700 and it is projected to cover the participation of weightlifters in international competitions such as Australian Open International tourney, IWF Grand Prix, the Sixth Russian President's Cup, IWF Junior World Championships (Georgia), the Africa Rio Olympic qualifier (Cameroun) and other domestic activities.

Mr Nunoo Mensah further appealed to corporate bodies to complement the effort of the GWF by supporting it with funds to be able to meet its target for the year.
