Ghana's veterans table tennis team dominates regional ournaments in Togo and Benin

Ghana’s Veterans Table Tennis Association (VTTAG) has achieved a historic double triumph, securing multiple medals and trophies at two prestigious regional tournaments held in Togo and Benin.

The veteran players displayed exceptional skill, discipline, and resilience, further strengthening Ghana’s growing reputation as a dominant force in African table tennis.

At the recently concluded CPPing Tournament in Lomé, Togo, Ghana made an immediate impression. David Ashong of the Ghana Fire Service captured gold in the Men’s 40+ Singles category, delivering a commanding performance throughout the competition.

The national team added to the success by winning silver in the Teams Event, narrowly missing the top spot but demonstrating significant collective strength.

Ghana carried this momentum into the West African Singles Open Championship in Cotonou, Benin, where they faced formidable opponents from Togo, Niger, host nation Benin, Nigeria, and a specially invited Chinese veterans squad.

Reuben Okine delivered a standout performance in the Men’s 40+ Singles final, defeating the home favorite from Benin 4–1 to secure the gold medal and championship trophy.

The highlight of the tournament came in the Men’s 60+ Singles category, where Ghana achieved a remarkable 1–2 finish. Veteran star Leonard Vanderpuye-Orgle, affectionately known as “The Royal Baby,” dominated the final against his compatriot, winning 3–0 to claim the gold medal and trophy.

With two gold medals and two prestigious trophies from the Benin championship alone, plus gold and silver from Togo, Ghana emerged as the most successful nation at the West African Singles Open.

Speaking after the victories, VTTAG officials expressed pride in the team’s achievements and thanked supporters back home for their unwavering encouragement. The association hailed the results as a testament to years of dedication and strategic preparation.

These back-to-back successes have ignited national excitement and further elevated Ghana’s profile in veteran and regional table tennis circles.

Fans and officials now look ahead to future international competitions with renewed optimism.

"Congratulations to David Ashong, Reuben Okine, Leonard Vanderpuye-Orgle, and the entire VTTAG delegation for bringing glory to Ghana."
