Amadu Mohammed displayed remarkable determination and resilience to defeat England’s Ellis Trowbridge by a 4-1 split decision in the men's 55kg (bantamweight) boxing quarterfinal, securing Ghana’s second medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The Ghanaian prevailed in a closely contested bout, earning scores of 29-28, 29-28, 27-30, 29-28, and 29-28 at SEC Hall 5 in Glasgow on Tuesday afternoon.
The victory sends him into Friday’s semifinal, where he will battle for a place in Saturday’s gold medal bout.
The Accra 2023 African Games gold medalist will next face Australia’s Jye Dixon, who advanced after stopping Bangladesh’s Md Rakib Hossain in the second round of their quarterfinal contest.
With a place in the semifinals, Mohammed is assured of at least a bronze medal, continuing Ghana’s impressive boxing campaign at Glasgow 2026.
“Amadu is a good boxer, congratulations to him and I wish him all the best for the rest of the Commonwealth Games. But I want him to know that this will not be the last time we meet, I will return the favour next time,” Towbridge told Graphic Sports after the fight.
21 year old Mohammed follows sensational para thrower Zinabu Issah who grabbed silver in women’s F57 shot put last night to secure Ghana’s first medal of the multi-sports Games running July 23-August 2 in Scotland.
Meanwhile, heavyweight boxer, Jibril Muntari is out of the competition after losing every round on every scorecard, 30-27, 30, 27, 30-27, 30-27, 30-27 to Garyn McAllister of Northern Ireland in men’s 90 kg quarter finals.
The 28 year old making his Commonwealth Games debut, pushed hard but found no way through 21 year old McAllister who controlled proccedings throughout and progresses to the semi finals.
Three other Black Bombers, Precious Akai Nettey (70 kg), Desmond Pappoe (80 kg) and Daniel Plange (90+ kg) will also fight for semi final places tomorrow as Ghana seeks to top up the three medals it won in boxing four years ago in Birmingham.
