GOC must call for Congress now - demand federation heads

A number of sports federation presidents are calling on the leadership of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) to call for an extra ordinary congress now.

This, according to them, will pave the way for them to decide on whether or not to hold the actual electoral congress in April next year.

In a communique sighted by the Graphic Sports the federation presidents said even though they had the two-thirds majority which allowed them, per the GOC constitution, to call for the congress, they had not done so as a result of respect for the GOC leadership.

However, the respective federation heads some of who also spoke to the Graphic Sports, said they were giving Prof Dodoo and his team a few days to respond to this proposal after which they would advise themselves.

The group of federation heads reminded Prof Dodoo and his team to be guided by the fact that they were in office now because of the tenets of a resolution passed by the membership and not by virtue of the GOC constitution.

They, therefore, noted that for the GOC leadership to refuse to hold the congress immediately after the Rio Games as stipulated in the resolution was a complete breach of trust.

“We all agreed in a resolution to hold congress immediately after the Rio Olympics and we did that among other matters to be able to synchronise our calender with that of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the rest of the world but from the look of things we may have problems going to  Japan 2020”, they told the Graphic Sports.

The federation heads stressed that even though the GOC constitution posited that congress could be held from now till April next year, the GOC  was still keeping its members in the dark as “we have not received any formal communication to that effect. That is why we are calling on them to hold an extra ordinary congress so that we can all address the issues”.
