The competitions, according to Prof. Francis Dodoo, the president of the GOC ,  will target young athletes with the requisite potentials to nurture them.

Announcing this recently in Accra after receiving a cheque for GHC 86, 385.70 from the Ghana National Lotteries (GNL) as part of a sponsorship package for the July, 2014  Glasgow Commonwealth Games, Prof. Dodoo said it was time to  unearth talents across the country and offer them the requisite training  and exposure.

“ We are going to organise five local competitions annually,  and they would be held between February and May each year on both tartan and non -tartan tracks .

The intention is to improve upon the performances of the local athletes for them to acquire the needed experience and compete favourably with their foreign counterparts.” he explained.

He said as  part of the agenda to offer  the needed exposure to athletes in Ghana for them to excel in international competitions, the GOC would arrange  international friendly competitions for them.

Expressing concern about the  lack of exposure for athletes in the country prior to their participation in international competitions, Prof. Dodoo said this often affected their performances and deprived them from winning medals.

“ Our athletes are not able to compete  favourably with their counterparts abroad because many of them do not get the needed exposure, hence our desire to organise series of training programmes for them at both the local and international levels,” he noted.

He commended NLA  for its donation, saying, it was  not only timely but also the largest donation received since he assumed office.

He disclosed that the GOC would spend part of the donation on a scheduled three-week training programme for the athletes who would participate in the Glasgow Commonwealth  Games which  would be held between July 23 and August 3, this year.
