Gold Stars eye Hearts upset in Accra showdown

Defending champions Bibiani Gold Stars face their sternest test of the campaign so far when they square off with resurgent Accra Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium tomorrow in what promises to be a captivating Week Seven showdown of the Ghana Premier League.

For Hearts, this fixture offers more than just three points — it is a chance to prove that last weekend’s morale-boosting 2–0 triumph over Berekum Chelsea was not a flash in the pan.

That win at the Golden City Park finally broke their early-season scoring drought and restored a sense of belief within the Phobian ranks that a serious title challenge might be taking shape under Coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani.

Currently sitting second on the league log behind Medeama SC, Hearts have struggled to find the back of the net this season (the Phobians have scored just four goals in six matches but have yet to concede a goal), but their display at Berekum, where Hamza Issa and Mawuli Wayo found the target, was a statement of intent.

Despite the victory, Coach  Dramani remains cautious and focused on the long-term development of his team.

“There is more room to improve; we have to be consistent and sustainable. We still have a lot to work on, but we are on the right path,” he told the media after the game.

Miners back in business

Tomorrow’s encounter will, therefore, test that consistency against a Gold Stars side rediscovering its winning rhythm after a slow start to the campaign.

The Bibiani-based club, nicknamed The Miners, bounced back impressively from two consecutive defeats to hand league leaders Heart of Lions their first loss of the season, with a commanding 3-1 victory at Dun’s Park in Bibiani last Monday.

That performance has injected fresh confidence into the camp of the title holders ahead of the trip to Accra.

Key players such as Richard Kotey Amon, Sampson Eduku, and Samuel Atta Kumi, who all scored in that victory, are expected to play pivotal roles once again for the champions.

Interim coach, Nana Yaw Amankwah, will be banking on Gold Stars' improving form to cause an upset in Accra.

Gold Stars are still dealing with managerial uncertainty following the departure of Coach Frimpong Manso, who guided them to their maiden league title last season.

His exit came after the team’s disappointing exit from continental competition at the hands of Algerian champions, JS Kabylie.

Assistant coach Amankwah has since taken charge in an interim capacity, and a positive result against Hearts could strengthen his case for a permanent appointment.

“The boys are motivated and ready. We respect Hearts, but we are not coming to sit back; we’re coming to compete,” a confident Amankwah hinted in the build-up to the match.

Hearts, however, remain one of the toughest sides to beat at home under Dramani.

The Phobians are yet to concede a goal this season, scoring four times and keeping a perfect defensive record—thanks to the solidity of defenders Amankwah Baafi, Oppong Afrane, Kevin Osei Asibey, Ranford Mensah and goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.

In contrast, Gold Stars have scored five goals but conceded seven, which is an indication of the fragility of their backline; a concern they must address if they hope to contain Hearts’ resurgent attack.

Head-to-head stats

Tomorrow’s clash will mark the ninth meeting between the two sides. Hearts have won three, Gold Stars two, while three have ended in draws.

Last season, Gold Stars shocked Hearts with a 1-0 win in Accra, before the reverse fixture at Bibiani ended goalless.

The Miners will undoubtedly draw inspiration from that triumph as they seek to repeat the feat, while Hearts will be keen to avoid another home setback against the reigning champions.

For Coach Dramani, this match is about building momentum and maintaining dominance, while for Amankwah, it is a chance to prove his tactical worth against one of the league’s traditional powerhouses.
