GPL Week 24: Asante Kotoko secure draw against Samartex
Asante Kotoko battled back to earn a vital point against defending champions Samartex in an exciting match at the Nsenkyire Sports Arena on Saturday, March 15, 2025.
The 1-1 draw kept the Porcupine Warriors at the top of the league table, though their position could be short-lived, with their nearest rivals just one point behind.
Although the draw, Kotoko remain at the top of the league table, just one point ahead of second-placed Bibiani GoldStars, who have an opportunity to overtake them when they face Aduana Stars in Dormaa on Sunday.
Samartex took the lead in the 39th minute when Dramani Awuah fired a powerful low shot into the net, leaving Kotoko’s goalkeeper with no chance.

The home side, eager to avenge their earlier 1-0 loss to Kotoko this season, dominated large parts of the first half, limiting the visitors' attacking opportunities.
Kotoko, however, came out stronger in the second half, displaying resilience and offensive intent. Their persistence paid off when Kwame Opoku, in fine form, equalized with a clinical finish.
Opoku, who has been in deadly form in the second half of matches this season, thought he had given Kotoko all three points when he netted again. However, his second goal was ruled offside, denying him a brace.
The match was a hard-fought contest, with both teams showcasing attacking flair and strong defensive play. Samartex, eager for a win to boost their title defense, pushed forward in search of a late winner. However, Kotoko’s defense stood firm, ensuring they left with a valuable point.
Kwame Opoku’s sixth goal of the season further solidified his status as a key player for Kotoko, especially in the latter stages of matches. His knack for making an impact in the second half has been a major asset for the Porcupine Warriors.
