Hearts of Oak return to winning ways

Accra Hearts of Oak secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Medeama SC at the Accra Sports Stadium yesterday, ending a four-game winless run in the Ghana Premier League.

A stunning first-half strike by midfielder, Raphael Amponsah, proved decisive in a tense encounter that marked Hearts’ return to the Accra Stadium for the first time since September 2024.

The win eased the growing pressure on Hearts head coach Aboubakar Ouattara, who had been under scrutiny following a string of disappointing results.

Only goal

Amponsah's goal, a powerful long-range effort, gave the Phobians a crucial lead which they defended with grit and determination.

Despite Medeama’s dominance in possession and attacking statistics — registering 14 shots to Hearts’ 7, with four on target — they failed to convert their chances and were punished for their wastefulness in front of goal.

The second half of the game was marred by drama as both teams had a player sent off, adding further tension to an already competitive match.

Red cards

The red cards disrupted the game’s rhythm but did little to change the outcome as Hearts managed the game efficiently after taking the lead.

The victory lifts Hearts of Oak to 40 points on the league table and back into the top four, keeping them in contention for the title.

They still trail their fierce rivals and league leaders, Asante Kotoko, by six points.

For Medeama, the loss pushes them down to seventh place, as inconsistency continues to plague their campaign.

Despite being the more enterprising side, their failure to convert chances cost them valuable points.
