Jon Power hunts for WBO Global glory in London

Ghana’s rising light heavyweight, Jonathan Mbanugu (better known in the ring as Jon Power), is set for the biggest test of his professional career on June 28, when he squares off against undefeated Albanian-Italian fighter Alban Bermenta for the WBO Global title in London.

This high-stakes showdown at the Harrow Leisure Centre marks a pivotal moment in Mbanugu’s journey –– a fight not only for a belt but also for personal redemption.

The 27-year-old Ghanaian is still haunted by the tragic end to his bout earlier this year on March 29, when Nigerian opponent Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju collapsed in the third round and later died in the hospital.

Strong return

Shaken by the incident, Mbanugu seriously considered hanging up his gloves, spurred on by his mother’s plea to walk away from the sport. However, following counselling and support from Ghana’s top boxing trainers and medical experts, he found the strength to return. His comeback was emphatic — a second-round TKO over compatriot Abraham Okine in Lomé, Togo, on  May 17.

Now armed with a record of 15 wins (14 by knockout), one draw and a single defeat, Power sets his sights on global silverware against a formidable opponent.

Bermenta, 33, was born in Vrap, Albania, but plies his trade in Italy, where he turned pro in March 2018. He boasts an impressive undefeated record of 19 wins, one draw and 15 KOs and is no stranger to the Harrow Leisure Centre, having secured a third-round KO there in his last outing in February.

With experience fighting in Germany, Switzerland, Macedonia and Albania, Bermenta brings pedigree and poise to the ring.

But Jon Power’s camp remains confident. His manager, Gordon Frimpong, is leading the Ghanaian contingent to the UK and believes his boxer is primed for victory.

“It was a huge relief to see Jon back in the gym — and even more so when he fought and won in Togo. What happened in March was devastating, but he’s shown real courage and strength to move forward,” Frimpong told the Daily Graphic.

“This title means everything. Jon is ready — mentally, physically, emotionally — and he’s determined to bring this belt home. We urge all Ghanaians to keep him in their prayers. This victory will be for all of us.”

With the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) sanctioning the bout and Premier Promotions & Management staging the event, fireworks are expected as Jon Power steps into the spotlight with hopes of not just claiming a prestigious belt, but closing a painful chapter with a triumphant new beginning.
