Bigger payouts ahead: Absa Black Star Marathon enhances prize structure for 2025 edition

With the 2025 Absa Black Star Marathon fast approaching, organisers are making headlines with plans to significantly increase prize money, aiming to attract top-tier athletes and elevate the prestige of Ghana’s premier marathon.

Registration for the marathon is currently underway, with a deadline set for Monday, June 30, 2025, and participants are already buzzing about the enhanced rewards.

This year’s event will feature a range of categories, including the 42.2 km marathon for men and women, the 42.2 km racing wheelchair marathon, and the 10 km run/walk/jog, alongside a 10 km wheelchair race.

The prize structure, as revealed in the latest payout table, shows substantial cash rewards for top finishers, with the total prize pool exceeding GH¢132,400.00. Notably, winners in the men’s and women’s marathon categories will each take home GH¢15,000.00, while wheelchair racers and 10k participants will also enjoy competitive payouts.

“There would be attractive cash prizes for the top athletes in every category, with over 200 medals to be given to athletes who cross the finish line,” Dr. Eric Kwame Adae, the Founder and President of the Black Star Marathon (BSM) said.

Additionally, all participants will receive certificates and goodie bags filled with sponsor gifts, further sweetening the deal.

The move to boost prize money underscores the marathon’s growing reputation as a key event on Africa’s athletics calendar. “We want to encourage elite runners and wheelchair athletes to see Ghana as a must-attend destination,” said Kennedy Adjei-Ohene, a member of the organising committee.

“The increased rewards reflect our commitment to excellence and inclusivity in sports.”
