Macbones, Tetteh return on Easter Sunday at Laboma

Local boxing rivals Seth Gyimah, popularly known as Freezy Macbones, and Jonathan “Worldwide” Tetteh will both step back into the ring for the first time this year when they headline separate bouts at Laboma Beach Resort in La, Accra, on Easter Sunday, April 5.

The pair, who squared off in a heated encounter last December, are widely expected to settle their rivalry in a much-anticipated rematch later this year.

For now, however, both fighters take on different opponents in tune-up contests on a fight card aptly dubbed “Resurrection Fight Night”.

The Easter Sunday show, promoted by RBS Promotions, is being staged in collaboration with Alex Ntiamoah Boakye’s Box Office Sports Promotions at one of Accra’s most popular beachside venues.

Gyimah, who returned to Ghana only last week from his training base in France, will be eager to bounce back to winning ways when he faces Nigeria’s Jamiu Animashaun in an eight-round International Light Heavyweight contest — the latest instalment of the ever-spicy “Jollof Derby” between Ghana and Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Tetteh will make the first defence of his national Light Heavyweight title against the hard-hitting Aziz Quartey, nicknamed The Punisher, in what promises to be another explosive clash.

The action-packed bill also features three of Ghana’s most highly rated rising stars — Alfred “Showtime” Lamptey, Joseph “Jaguar” Commey and Michael “Black Spider” Abban — all involved in bouts that could shape their ambitions of breaking onto the global stage.

Lamptey, a former national, West Africa, UBO Continental Africa, WBC Youth Silver and WBO Youth Super Featherweight champion, steps up in weight for a stern eight-round Super Lightweight test against former world title challenger, Maxwell Awuku.

Commey, the reigning national and UBO Africa Lightweight champion, takes on the experienced Bright Ayala, a veteran of 18 professional fights, in an eight-round Lightweight contest.

Abban, the current WBA Africa, Commonwealth Youth and Silver Super Flyweight champion, will square off with Damien Zannou of Benin in a 10-round International Super Flyweight bout.

Also on the undercard, veteran Benjamin “Daddy Lumba” Lamptey meets Kamarudeen Boyefio, while Wilson Asamoah faces Godwin Tetteh, with both fights scheduled as six-round Featherweight contests.
