Malta Guinness Women's Premier League: Police Ladies, Army Ladies renew rivalry

The 2023/2024 Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League season starts this weekend with exciting fixtures, as zonal champions, Sekondi Hasaacas Ladies, play as guests of returnees, Sea Lions, at the Nduom Sports Stadium, Elmina on Saturday, October 28, 2023.

Coach Daniel Nii Adjei's side make their return to topflight football after a year's absence, and will seek to pick the maximum points having posed a great threat to Hasaacas Ladies in times past.

In another highly anticipated regional derby, Cape Coast Lady Strikers make a short trip to Mankessim to play as guests of Essiam Socrates who are expected to field Ellen Alormenu, voted Discovery of the Year last season.

Their last encounter at the same venue ended in a stalemate but this time Lady Strikers have in their fold former Black Princesses coach, Ben Fokuo, whose experience is expected to impact his team's performance.

The Achimota School park will witness a service derby when Police Ladies host Army Ladies in the battle for supremacy, with the visiting team aiming to build on their recent triumph in the Women’s Super Cup.

Dansoman-based Faith Ladies will host Berry Ladies at the Carl Reindorf Park in a clash which sets the home side against their conquerors in the bronze medal clash in the Women’s Super Cup.

Last season Berry Ladies finished fourth on the Southern Zone log just below Faith Ladies who ended the competition in third position.

Soccer Intellectuals will slug it out with debutants Jonina FC on the opening day of the season. Jonina Ladies won the Division One Championship playoff, and with the introduction of new head coach Lawrence Adjah-Tetteh they hope to get off to a good start in the women's topflight.

Ampem Darkoa on break

In the northern zone, Ampem Darkoa Ladies' title defence has been put on hold to enable them to prepare and compete in the CAF Women’s Champions League.

However, all eyes will be on debutants Fosu Royal Ladies as they start their topflight season against visiting Supreme Ladies at the Ohene Ameyaw Park in Techiman.

Prisons Ladies will play host to Tamale-based Super Ladies at the Sunyani Coronation Park, with new coach Bernice Kyeremeh Adutwumwaa looking ahead to a good start for Prisons Ladies after replacing Amadu Imoro. 

Returnees Kumasi Sports Academy will host giants, Pearl Pia Ladies, at the Bantama Astro Turf Park. KUSA, as the hosts are affectionately called, are back in the premier league after suffering relegation two seasons ago, and both sides go into the game with no injury concerns.

The Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium will host the game between Northern Ladies and Ashtown Ladies with the hosts starting as favourites as they boast a better record against their opponents.
