Ministry of Sports launches 2026 Independence Day Walk/Run to promote health and unity

The Ministry of Sports and Recreation, in partnership with Millennium Marathon Sports Ltd. and KGL Group, has launched the 2026 Independence Day Walk/Run, scheduled for March 7, 2026, to commemorate Ghana’s independence while promoting physical fitness and national unity.

The event—now evolving into a transformative national tradition—aims to go beyond the conventional parades and speeches by encouraging mass participation in a vibrant celebration of energy, health, and togetherness.

Speaking at the launch, Chief Director of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, Wilhemina Asamoah emphasized that the initiative is “more than just a race.”

“This upcoming event is a powerful movement to foster community engagement, promote healthy lifestyles, and strengthen unity,” she stated.

Catherine Morton, Race Director of Millennium Marathon Sports Ltd, echoed the sentiment, declaring that on March 7, 2026, “Ghana will take one giant step – not only in commemoration of our independence but in affirmation of our collective health, vitality, and future.”

Morton stressed that healthy living is a national responsibility, adding, “It’s a duty to live healthy, to live united, and to live proud.” She said the walk/run aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision for a healthier and more united Ghana.

Andrew Agbo Kitcher, Vice President of Ghana Athletics, highlighted the symbolic role of running in Ghana’s history.

“Athletics has always played a vital role in shaping Ghana’s national identity,” he said. “Running has served as a symbol of resilience, determination, and collective pride.”

Kitcher commended the organisers for their commitment to mass sports participation and community fitness, saying, “Ghana Athletics salutes the foundation for its steadfast dedication.”

The collaborative initiative marks a proactive effort to integrate fitness into Ghana’s cultural celebration of independence. Organisers are calling on Ghanaians nationwide to join the historic event, which aims to inspire future generations to embrace movement, well-being, and national pride.

The 2026 Independence Day Walk/Run is poised to become a lasting tradition, redefining how the nation honours its freedom through active, united, and healthy participation.
