New beginnings: How three clubs earned their place among Ghana's elite

Promotion is often remembered for a single defining moment — a late goal, a decisive victory, or the final whistle that confirms a season's ambition has been realised.

Yet for Debibi United, Ashanti Gold 04 and Port City FC, promotion to the Ghana Premier League was not built on one moment alone. It was the culmination of months of consistency, discipline and belief.

As the curtain fell on the 2025/26 Access Bank Division One League season, the three clubs emerged from their respective zones as worthy champions, each carrying the hopes of their communities into Ghana's top flight.

For Debibi United, the journey represents more than sporting success. The club's promotion has placed the Tain District firmly on Ghana's football map, offering a region rarely represented at the highest level of the game a reason to celebrate.

Their campaign was built on determination. Finishing top of Zone One B with 60 points from 28 matches, Debibi United still had one final hurdle to overcome. A 3-1 victory over Tamale City in the promotional playoff eventually secured their place in the Premier League, triggering celebrations among players, officials and supporters alike.

For years, football followers in the district have watched the club steadily develop. Now, they have a team capable of competing against some of the country's biggest names.

While Debibi United fought their way to promotion, Ashanti Gold 04 made theirs look almost inevitable.

The Obuasi-based side dominated Zone Two from start to finish, collecting 58 points and opening an impressive 11-point gap at the top of the table. Their superiority throughout the campaign effectively ended the promotion race long before the final round of matches.

The significance of their return extends beyond football. Obuasi has long been regarded as one of Ghana's passionate football communities, with generations of supporters deeply connected to the sport. The return of top-flight football is expected to reignite that passion and restore a sense of pride to the town.

For many residents, promotion feels like the return of something familiar — a club representing the community on the national stage.

In the Eastern Region, Port City FC produced a campaign defined by consistency and confidence. The Akim Kukurantumi-based club accumulated 64 points from 29 matches and secured promotion with four games remaining.

Their ability to maintain momentum throughout the season proved decisive. While rivals battled for position, Port City FC remained focused on their objective, eventually finishing as deserved winners of Zone Three.

The achievement also highlights the growing influence of football beyond Ghana's traditional strongholds. With Premier League football heading to Akim Kukurantumi, local supporters will now have the opportunity to witness elite competition in their own community.

As celebrations continue in Bono, Obuasi and the Eastern Region, the reality of football's unforgiving nature is being felt elsewhere.

Nations FC, Hohoe United FC and Eleven Wonders have all been relegated from the Ghana Premier League after difficult campaigns. Their departures serve as a reminder that success in football is never permanent and that every season presents a new challenge.

For the promoted trio, however, this is a moment to savour.

Promotion is more than a reward for winning matches. It is recognition of months of sacrifice, hard work and collective ambition. It is a testament to players who performed under pressure, coaches who maintained belief and supporters who remained loyal throughout the journey.

The celebrations may eventually fade, but the achievement will remain part of each club's history.

The next challenge now awaits. Competing in the Ghana Premier League will demand greater resources, stronger squads and even higher levels of performance. Yet if the 2025/26 season proved anything, it is that Debibi United, Ashanti Gold 04 and Port City FC have already demonstrated the qualities required to overcome difficult odds.

They have earned their place among Ghana's elite. The task now is to stay there.
