NSA pledges support for amateur boxing revival after talks with GBF
The Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has assured the newly elected leadership of the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) that the welfare and interests of amateur boxers will remain a key priority under the Authority’s policies and programmes.
Mr Ampofo Ankrah gave the assurance when the GBF executives paid a courtesy call on him at his office at the Accra Sports Stadium on Wednesday. He underscored the importance of building a strong and united amateur boxing structure as the foundation for a competitive professional boxing sector in the country.
He called for greater cohesion within the amateur boxing fraternity and pledged the NSA’s support in addressing the federation’s financial challenges, particularly to enable the smooth organisation of national championships and other major competitions.
“We must improve the interface of amateur boxing and begin serious preparations for the Commonwealth Games,” Mr Ampofo Ankrah stressed.
The GBF delegation was led by its President, Mr Dauda Fuseini, and included the First Vice-President, Nii Gonti Adzor, as well as other executive members. The visit was to seek institutional support and funding for the federation’s planned activities.
Mr Fuseini acknowledged lapses under the previous administration and said his leadership had been given a clear mandate to correct them.
“The burden is heavy, but with the support of the NSA, we will overcome it,” he said.
He outlined plans to restructure the federation to make it more transparent, accountable and future-oriented, with a strong focus on athlete development.
Mr Fuseini further announced that the GBF would organise a National Individual Boxing Championship from January 29 to February 1, 2026, to select boxers to represent Ghana at the Commonwealth Games and other international competitions.
In response, Mr Ampofo Ankrah reiterated the NSA’s full backing for the new GBF leadership and its programmes, expressing optimism that the collaboration would help reposition amateur boxing in Ghana.
