Ping Pong: Top stars for Chairman’s Cup

About 350 table tennis players are expected to compete in this year’s edition of the Chairman’s Cup competition which is scheduled to be held at the Fantasy Dome in Accra on Saturday, February 15, 2020.

The competition which is the season opener for table tennis activities, is being held in honour of the president of the Ghana Table Tennis Association (GTTA), Mr Mawuko Afadzinu, and patrons of the sport.

Organisers of the competition have promised an amount of GH¢6,000 and a trophy, as well as other exciting prizes for the winner.

Interestingly, unlike the previous years where awards were given to only semi-finalists, this year’s edition will reward participants who are placed between the first to the eighth position.

Formidable players on parade

The 2020 Chairman’s Cup promises to be an exciting event as top players from across the nation such as Ernest Mawutor Quarcoo, defending champion, Emmanuel Commey; Emmanuel Asante, Samuel Akayode, Isaac Baiden and others gear up to compete in the men’s division.

Defending women’s champion, Eva Adom Amankwaah, will love to retain her title but she must lock horns with formidable players such as Beatrice Gyasi, Cynthia Kwabi, as well as in-form Hilda Agbotta who won two gold and a silver medal in the just- ended Ghana University Games (GUSA) for Cape Coast University.

Competitive event

William Asare, the finance officer of the association, told the Daily Graphic why this year’s event would be competitive.

“This year’s Chairman Cup will be keenly contested because it’s a competition of equals. Most of the players who are competing are of the same pedigree,” he stated and added that “participants will pay a registration fee of GH¢20, while juniors and cadets will register with an amount of GH¢10 and GH¢5, respectively.

Food and drinks would be catered for.”
