Stephen Appiah honoured At Allianz Awards
Black Stars team manager Stephen Appiah and two other sports personalities- powerlifter Charles Narh Teye and para-cyclist Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah-have been honoured at the 2017 Allianz Awards for using their careers to inspire young people.
Appiah, who led Ghana to two FIFA World Cups in 2006 and 2010, was honoured for using his grass- to grace story to inspire countless young people, and was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, while Teye and Ofosu Yeboah were honoured for similar feats despite being physically challenged, at the event held at the National Theatre in Accra.
Receiving his award, the former Hearts of Oak and Fenerbahce star advised the youth to engage in acitivities that were productive and would ensure a good future, than engage in social vices due to peer pressure.
“I never imagined that a day like this would come. It has been a long journey from Chorkor to Italy and from Italy to East Legon but through hard work and determination, I am here today.”
“I just want to tell the young ones to stay away from activities that can destroy their future, stay focused and work hard because that is the only way one can make it in life,” he said.
Other awardees were author and disability-rights advocate, Farida Efua Bedwei, international human rights activist, Brigitte Sossou Perenyi, and ace investigative Journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, who all took home a shield, an insurance package from Allianz Insurance Ghana and other products from the sponsors.
The five personalities were honoured under the categories: Inspiration, Hero, Purpose, Beyond Boundaries, Make a Difference and Bravery.
The event was organised by Allianz Ghana, an established stakeholder in the Ghanaian insurance market, in collaboration with O Africa to celebrate Ghanaian men and women who have gone beyond all kinds of difficulties to achieve their dreams.
