The table tennis competition at the GES Basic Schools Inter-Regional Sports Festival has reached the semifinal stage, with Volta, Eastern, Ashanti and Greater Accra securing places in the final four of both the girls’ and boys’ events after an action-packed day of competition on Friday, August 28, 2026.
The competition held at the Achimota School, featured intense group-stage and quarterfinal encounters as young talents from across the country battled for places in the medal rounds, with several regions producing impressive performances on the tables at the ongoing festival.
In the girls’ competition, Central opened its campaign with a commanding 3–0 victory over Northern, while Eastern also recorded a 3–0 win over Volta. Ashanti overcame Western 3–1, with Greater Accra completing the group-stage action with a convincing 3–0 victory over Bono.
The quarterfinals produced a number of strong performances, with Volta turning the tables on Central to secure a 3–1 victory and book its place in the semifinals. Eastern continued its impressive run with a 3–0 win over Northern, while Ashanti defeated Bono by the same scoreline.
Greater Accra also maintained its strong form, defeating Western 3–0 to complete the girls’ semifinal line-up.
The girls’ semifinals, scheduled for Saturday, August 29, will see Volta face Ashanti, while Eastern take on Greater Accra, with the winners advancing to the final and moving closer to the coveted gold medal.
In the boys’ competition, Central began strongly with a 3–0 win over Northern, while Greater Accra defeated Volta 3–0. Ashanti also made an emphatic start, overcoming Eastern 3–0, while Bono edged Western 3–1.
The knockout stage, however, brought a dramatic change in fortunes for some of the regions.
Volta produced one of the day’s most competitive results, defeating group-stage winners Central 3–2 in the quarterfinals to secure a semifinal place. Greater Accra continued its impressive campaign with a 3–0 victory over Northern, while Ashanti defeated Western 3–0.
Eastern completed the boys’ quarter-final line-up after overcoming Bono 3–1.
The boys’ semifinals will see Volta renew its contest with Ashanti, while Greater Accra faces Eastern, setting up two highly anticipated encounters as the regions battle for places in the final.
With both the boys’ and girls’ competitions now down to the final four, Saturday’s semifinal action promises another exciting chapter in the table tennis competition, as the young athletes look to secure their places in the finals and stake their claim to regional honours at the Inter-Regional Sports Festival.
