UDS, UG seeded as Honda Championship draw promises blockbuster clashes

Two of Ghana’s leading tertiary institutions, University for Development Studies and University of Ghana, have been seeded ahead of the draw for the 2026 Honda Football Championship, setting the stage for a potentially explosive tournament.

The draw is scheduled for Monday, March 23, at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, where the eight participating universities will be placed into two groups.

UDS has been pre-assigned to Group A, while UG will occupy the other group, a move designed to prevent an early clash between the two favourites and preserve the possibility of a high-profile encounter in the latter stages of the competition.

Tournament organisers have also separated Bolgatanga Technical University and Tamale Technical University in the draw to ensure they do not meet in the group phase.

The remaining four institutions — University of Professional Studies Accra, University of Energy and Natural Resources, University of Business and Integrated Development Studies and University of Mines and Technology — will be drawn at random to complete the two groups of four teams each.

Following the draw, a brief opening ceremony will be held on Tuesday, March 24, before UDS kicks off the tournament with the opening match against a yet-to-be-determined Group A opponent.

Fixtures will be played daily from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. until March 28, as the universities compete for honours in what is expected to be a keenly contested championship.

The competition, powered by Honda and Overseas Union Limited, and produced by RITE Sports Services, is anticipated to deliver high-quality university football, with pride and supremacy at stake among the participating institutions.
