WAFCON 2025: Coach Bjorkegren confident of Black Queens’ quarterfinal qualification
Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren remains confident that Ghana can still qualify for the quarterfinals of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), despite a winless start in their first two Group C matches.
The Ghanaian women’s national team is set to face Tanzania in a must-win final group match at the Stade Municipal de Berkane, with only victory guaranteeing a place in the next stage of the competition.
Speaking ahead of today's game, the Swede tactician expressed belief in his side’s ability to deliver when it matters most.
“We had 2.6 expected goals compared to their 0.6, which shows we created a lot of chances,” Bjorkegren said. “If we display the same performance and play like this, we are probably in the quarterfinals.”
Ghana began their WAFCON campaign with a 0-2 loss to defending champions South Africa before being held to a frustrating draw by West African rivals Mali — a result that left their qualification hopes hanging by a thread.
But Coach Bjorkegren is not pressing the panic button just yet.
“I’m happy with the one point; there’s no reason to panic at this point,” he said. “We still have a chance to qualify for the quarterfinals.”
The Black Queens will need to capitalise on their opportunities and show composure against Tanzania, who are also fighting for survival in a competitive Group C.
Ghana last reached the WAFCON quarterfinals in 2016 and will be looking to end that drought with a convincing performance in their final group fixture.
