Chelsea's Cole Palmer made Premier League history by becoming the first player to score four goals before half-time, leading the Blues to a thrilling 4-2 victory over Brighton at Stamford Bridge.

Brighton initially took the lead through Georginio Rutter, but Palmer quickly responded, netting the equalizer 15 minutes later. The England international then slotted home a penalty before completing his hat-trick with a stunning free kick, all within just under 10 minutes of match time.
Despite a brief fightback from Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, Palmer secured his fourth goal before the interval, latching onto a through ball from Jadon Sancho. His remarkable first-half performance set him apart in Premier League history, with no player previously achieving such a feat in the competition’s era.
Palmer, who enjoyed a breakout season last year following his move from Manchester City, had already scored twice in Chelsea's opening five league games under new boss Enzo Maresca. The 22-year-old’s first half could have been even more prolific, as he had a fifth goal ruled out for offside and also hit the woodwork in what was a frantic 45 minutes.
The second half saw Palmer show a more human side, missing a one-on-one chance with his weaker foot and hitting the bar with a half-volley. However, by then, Chelsea had eased the tempo, with Maresca making several substitutions to see out their third consecutive league win.
After the match, Maresca hailed Palmer as the “best in the Premier League," praising his hunger and humility. “He scored four but could have had two or three more,” Maresca said. “What makes him special is his humility, he hasn’t changed since I coached him at City’s under-23s. He’s a top player and a humble guy – that’s the most important thing.”
Palmer’s development under Maresca dates back to their time together in Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad, where the Italian coach identified the young star’s versatility. "He can play as a 10, a false nine, a winger—he’s so good in different roles, but inside the pitch is where he’s best," Maresca added.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler acknowledged Palmer’s brilliance but admitted his side contributed to their own downfall. "He punished every mistake," Hurzeler said. "You can't stop him one-on-one, and when we lost our structure, he was unstoppable."
