WWC: Nigeria, big guns in tight corner

The Women’s World Cup (WWC) has reached the final group stages but apart from defending champions, Japan and Brazil, none of the other participating teams are safe as they all have to wait till the end of their final group games to know their fate.

Former champions, Germany and USA, as well as favourites, France, are not completely safe having drawn in their respective games. France were stunned 0-2 by Colombia while African champions, Nigeria risk a first round elimination after a surprise 0-2 defeat to Australia in their second group match.


Japan earned a 2-0 win over Cameroun while Brazil beat Spain 1-0 in their game. All the other teams now have to wait till the very end of the group matches to know their fate, following the results of their second matches.


With only a match to end the group stages, the Super Falcons must win at all cost against USA to think of surviving as one of the best third place teams.


The Nigerians drew 3-3 against Sweden in their opening game and were expected to make amends with Australia, but that ended in great disappointment as the Maltidas scored, leaving the Falcons completely stranded.


Cameroun, after their flying start against Ecuador, found the defending champions very tough and must now see how their final game against Switzerland who beat Ecuador 10-1 in their game.
