Yeboah powers Hearts back to top

Accra Heart of Oak returned to the summit of the Ghana Premier League after defeating Berekum Chelsea 1-0 at the Golden City Park yesterday, while Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s second successive victory pushed them back into title contention following a 3-0 drubbing of Ebusua Dwarfs at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Sam Yeboah’s 59th minute goal ended Chelsea’s unbeaten home run and gave Kenichi Yatsuhashi’s side three valuable points to jump to the top of the league log, one point ahead of Wa All Stars who lost 1-3 away to Techiman City.

Ebenezer Agyapong put Techiman City into the lead, before Stephen Manu doubled his side’s lead. But against the run of play, Mathew Andoh scored to reduce the deficit and gave the visiting side some hope before Issaka Ibrahim put the game beyond the reach of the Wa lads.

In Kumasi, all eyes were on Kotoko to have a trouble-free afternoon with a home win against the league’s bottom side. It took a brace from in-form Dauda Mohammed and Sarfo Gyamfi to put Michael Osei’s side back into title hunt, moving into fifth position and four points off arch-rivals and league leaders Hearts, reports Kwadwo Baffoe Donkor.

Mohammed opened the floodgates in the 21st minute and scored his second goal in the 82nd minute, while Gyamfi registered his name on the scores sheet in the dying minutes of the first half.

Mohammed signalled his side’s intent early in the match when his shot hit the crossbar and bounced on the goal line before being cleared to safety. But the Dwarfs defence later succumbed to pressure in the 21st minute when the slippery Kotoko striker slotted in a pass from a teammate who had beaten the onrushing Dwarfs goalkeeper Frank Andoh.

Gyamfi hit the back of the net in the 44th minute after Isaac Kwain failed to clear a ball and allowed the Kotoko forward, who had then fallen down, to get back to his feet and put the ball  beyond the reach of Andoh.

Late into the game, Mohammed drilled the nail in Dwarfs’ coffin when he scored from a rebound, after his first shot was parried by substitute goalkeeper Akwesi Acheampong back into the striker’s path.

• Defending champions AshantiGold slipped further down the table to the 14th position after they were held to a scoreless draw by Bechem United at the Len Clay Stadium at Obuasi.

• At the Nana Agyemang- Badu Park at Dormaa-Ahenkro, tn-form Aduana Stars stretched their winning streak to four games after mauling Dreams FC 4-0. Richard Mpong set the home side on course with a goal in the 9th minute before Yaya Mohammed (two goals) and Bright Adjei completed the rout.
