The beneficiaries were presented with wheelbarrows, gas stoves and cylinders, electrical equipment, hair dryers and other accessories and carpentry and masonry tools.
Some of the beneficiaries were assisted to attend vocational and technical institutes to acquire skills in dressmaking, batik and tie-dye making, catering and hairdressing for two years and were awarded National Vocational and Technical Institute (NVTI) certificates.

Forty-five of the beneficiaries were also engaged as apprentices and trained in trades such as carpentry, masonry, electricals, refrigeration, auto spraying and auto mechanics.

The entire project, the training and the provision of kits cost GH¢300,000.

Funding

Funding for the project was provided by Toms Confectionery Group, a Danish chocolate manufacturing company, and the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), while Agroecom Ghana Ltd (AGL), a cocoa buying company, and IBIS, a Danish educational advocacy non-governmental organisation, ensured its implementation.

Background

In September 2012, AGL, IBIS and Toms Confectionery agreed to co-operate under a Danida business partnership framework in the implementation of “creating a sustainable cocoa supply chain in Ghana” project in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai and the Sefwi Wiawso districts.

IBIS then supported in improving access to quality basic education, provision of functional literacy courses for young adults, sensitisation of communities to child rights, capacity development of civil society organisations and training in labour and gender rights.

At the presentation ceremony in Bibiani, the Operations Manager of the AGL, Mr Ebenezer Mensah, said the support by the various stakeholders was aimed at empowering the youth to become economically independent.

He reminded the recipients of the need to observe good financial and management practices in their operations.

The District Chief Executive for Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai, Mr Jacob Ware, commended the various stakeholders for their support to the people which had come to complement government’s effort to reduce unemployment.

He stressed the need for the beneficiaries to be serious with their businesses and avoid any activity that would drive their clients away.
