The Consular & Diplomatic Service University (CDSU), founded in 2015, has announced a renewed phase of global academic expansion and institutional strengthening as it continues its mission as one of the continent’s leading centers for diplomatic education, leadership development, and international service training.
Originally established as the Foreign Service Training Academy, CDSU began its diplomatic training programs in some of Ghana’s most respected institutions, including the Old United States Embassy in Osu‑Accra, the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, and the University of Ghana, Legon. These early foundations positioned CDSU as a symbol of international diplomacy and a continental hub for emerging diplomats and global leaders.
Today, CDSU serves as the official academic and training arm for all seven international and continental diplomatic organizations under the WDO system: the World Diplomatic Organization (WDO), the African Diplomatic Organization (ADO), the Asian Diplomatic Organization (ASDO), the European Diplomatic Organization (EUDO), the American Diplomatic Organization (AMDO), the Middle‑East Diplomatic Organization (MEDO), and the Oceania Diplomatic Organization (OCDO). Through this mandate, CDSU trains and prepares diplomatic cohorts, staff, and students across multiple continents.
The university’s origins are closely tied to UNSCR 2250, the landmark United Nations resolution championed by HRH Crown Prince Hussein of Jordan, which emphasized youth participation in peacebuilding and global governance. CDSU’s early affiliation with the United Nations University further strengthened its academic credibility and commitment to international standards.
In 2017, the institution transitioned from the Emerging Leaders & Diplomats Institute (ELDI) into the Consular & Diplomatic Service University, becoming an autonomous non-profit diplomatic university. It later adopted the title “Diplomatic University” under an Independent Treaty endorsed by 54 African nations, establishing it as a permanent institutional pillar within the AUYA framework, now known as ADO. This treaty‑based recognition made CDSU one of Africa’s first youth‑focused diplomatic universities.
CDSU’s institutional development has been shaped by the guidance of globally respected leaders. The late H.E. Dr. Kofi Atta Annan served as Patron, following the earlier chancellorship of former President Jerry John Rawlings. Professor Jeffrey David Sachs, one of the world’s leading economists and global development experts, has also played a significant mentoring role, contributing to CDSU’s academic vision and international partnerships.
The university’s early diplomatic training programs attracted participation from high‑profile leaders, including former UN Secretary‑General Kofi Annan, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo‑Addo, who served as keynote speaker during one of the major training sessions. Professor Jeffrey Sachs and Dr. Sonia Ehrlich Sachs also participated in several academic engagements, including the 2019 International UN Youth Summit.
As CDSU expanded, it established academic branches in Asia, Europe, and London to support its global mission. Since 2020, following the Covid‑19 pandemic, the university transitioned fully to virtual learning, offering structured online diplomatic training and academic programs to students across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the diaspora. All programs now operate under the academic oversight of the WDO Headquarters in London, ensuring international alignment and accreditation.
The CDSU Asia Branch supports diplomatic training across the Asian continent, while the Europe Branch focuses on global governance and international cooperation. The London Branch serves as a strategic academic and administrative hub, supporting international students and global partnerships.
CDSU now offers a wide range of programs in diplomatic studies, consular affairs, international relations, global governance, peace and security, protocol and etiquette, humanitarian diplomacy, sustainable development, and leadership training. Programs are delivered through online, hybrid, and in‑person formats, making them accessible to learners worldwide.
Today, CDSU stands as a continental and global centre of excellence in diplomatic training and youth leadership development. As part of the ADO and WDO system, the university continues to strengthen Africa’s diplomatic corps, support global governance initiatives, promote peace and security, and advance Africa’s representation in international diplomacy. With its expanding global presence and the continued guidance of Professor Jeffrey Sachs, CDSU remains committed to shaping the future of diplomacy across Africa and the world.
