The ceremony, on the theme: “Rewarding Excellence through Healthy Competition,” was meant to acknowledge the  efforts of the industry’s practitioners and reward stakeholders who had worked towards the development and promotion of the sector in the region and the country at large.

There were two categories: Special and Competitive.

The  sector, according to the latest World Travel and Tourism Council annual economic impact research, had provided over 120 million jobs globally and contributed 9.5 per cent to global Gross Domestic Product (GDP). It  had also injected about $7.5 trillion to the global domestic economy to ensure its sustainable development.

In Ghana, the former Director-General of the Airport Company Limited, Dr Doreen Owusu-Fianko, said the tourism sector’s growth rate was about 10 per cent, but it mainly targeted business tourists. Ghana was ranked the 14th best in Africa’s tourism sector and 117 the globally.

That, Dr Owusu-Fianko said, was not deserving of a country full of rich culture, heritage ambiance and values. “Individuals and industries need to introduce healthy policies to ensure that disciplinary measures are adhered to in our tourism environments nationwide,” she explained.

That, she added, would make the country’s tourism sector a viable one and sustain its development since it was endowed with a lot of tourist attractions.

She therefore advised stakeholders in the tourism sector to team up and ensure that Ghana got what it deserved from the industry for its economic growth.

Other recipients of awards were: Barcelos Restaurant, a fast food joint at Ablekuma, near Accra, Fast Food Joint of the Year 2014, and Alisa Hotel, North Ridge, was awarded for being an indigenous hotel which had excelled by competing with the top-class hotels in the country.

The General Manager of Labadi Beach Hotel, Mr Michael Rathrers, dedicated the company’s award to the quality human resource that the hotel had, noting “we ensure our clients always receive the best of our service and hospitality.”

The Deputy Greater Accra Regional Minister, Mr Djanmah Vanderpuye, commended the awardees and urged  GTA and its stakeholders to be innovative in order to attract more investment for the country.
