Mobile Web Ghana endorses Global AI Declaration, pledges to champion responsible innovation across Africa

Mobile Web Ghana has joined over 40 global organisations—including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), GIZ, KfW, Smart Africa and UNICEF—in endorsing the Hamburg Declaration on Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The move places the Ghana-based technology and entrepreneurship hub among a distinguished coalition committed to advancing ethical, inclusive and sustainable AI development worldwide.

The declaration was formally launched at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference, held from June 2–3, 2025, in Hamburg, Germany. The high-level event brought together governments, civil society, academia, and private sector leaders to align digital innovation—particularly AI—with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Representing Ghana at the global gathering, Florence Toffa, Director of Mobile Web Ghana, participated in the discussions and co-signed the declaration. Her involvement, alongside other global leaders, underscored the organisation’s commitment to ensuring that African voices—especially those of youth and women—are part of shaping global AI governance.

“The Hamburg Declaration serves as a powerful multi-stakeholder commitment to ensuring AI is inclusive, ethical, and human-centred,” Ms Toffa said. “Mobile Web Ghana is proud to be one of the few African hubs at the table.”

The declaration outlines five key thematic pillars—People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnerships—and calls on stakeholders to work together to ensure AI accelerates the SDGs and leaves no one behind. It emphasises equitable data access, human rights safeguards, digital inclusion, environmentally responsible AI infrastructure, and international collaboration.

As part of its commitment to the Hamburg Declaration, Mobile Web Ghana has unveiled a roadmap of strategic actions designed to localise responsible AI principles in Ghana and across Africa. These include the creation of AI Learning Hubs and Clubs in high schools to introduce young Ghanaians to AI early, as well as AI literacy programmes for policymakers and civil society organisations to promote informed governance.

In addition, the hub will launch an ‘AI for SDGs Fellowship’, which aims to empower young African leaders—particularly women—to develop AI-driven solutions to local development challenges. Other commitments include supporting open data initiatives and prioritising gender-inclusive AI projects that elevate women and marginalised communities as leaders in Africa’s AI future.

“Innovation without inclusion is incomplete,” said Ms Toffa. “We are not just adopting tools—we are shaping the future. AI must be made for us, with us.”

Founded in 2010, Mobile Web Ghana has long been at the forefront of youth-centred digital empowerment. In 2024 alone, the organisation trained more than 10,000 participants through 241 digital training programmes, engaging both in-person and virtual learners. It also established 26 strategic partnerships to advance its mission of bridging digital divides and localising the SDGs.

The Hamburg Declaration, adopted on June 3, 2025, is a result of months of global consultations and collaboration. It has already been endorsed by a range of prominent international organisations, including the foreign ministries of France and Italy, AI Hub Senegal, Women in AI, Global Affairs Canada, and the Smart Africa initiative.

As the digital age accelerates, Mobile Web Ghana is calling on development partners, governments, and private sector actors to collaborate and support its initiatives.

“Collective action is the only way to ensure AI becomes a tool for equity, sustainability, and transformation,” Ms Toffa said. “Africa must be more than a user—we must be co-creators of the digital future.”
