Prices of foodstuffs reduce marginally

Prices of some foodstuff on the local markets have reduced marginally ahead of the Christmas season.

Tomato recorded the highest drop with 14 per cent at the close of the second week of December at an average price of GH¢10.10 per ‘medium size tomato tin.’

The Content Manager at Esoko, Mr Francis Danso Adjei, said the development was as a result of the influx of tomatoes into the local markets.

The decrease in the price of tomato was followed by Maize which made a 5 per cent drop to close the week at GH¢3.80 per olunka.

Local Rice also followed with a percentage loss to close the week at GH¢7.60 per olunka.

However, Yam (Pona) gained 14 per cent to close the week at GH¢4.10 per ‘medium size tuber’. Soya bean followed with a 5-per cent gain to close the week at GH¢6.20 per olunka and Groundnut with a 3-per cent gain to close the week at GH¢12.00 per olunka.

The price of Cassava (fresh tubers) also increased by a percentage point to close the week at GH¢ 3.50 per 3-4 tubers.The price for an “olunka” of maize gained 3 per cent in Kumasi to close the week at GH¢5.10 and dropped by 17 per cent in Accra to close the week at GH¢2.50. The cereal also dropped by 25 per cent in Tamale to close the week at GH¢3.00, while in the other markets, the price remained unchanged.

A ‘medium size tomato tin’ full of fresh tomatoes lost 34 per cent in Kumasi to close the week at GH¢6.30 with Techiman losing 44 per cent to close at GH¢5.60 and also with Takoradi and Dambai dropping 17 and 10 per cent to close the week at GH¢18.00 and GH¢6.50 respectively. 

The commodity however made a gain in Tamale, gaining 9 per cent to close the week at GH¢7.20. In the other markets, prices remained the same.
