SSNIT partners banks to provide mortgage for workers

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has entered into a partnership with some banks in the country to help provide mortgage loans for workers interested in owning homes at the Asokore Mampong Affordable Housing project in the Ashanti Region.

The Director-General of SSNIT, Dr John Ofori Tenkorang, who disclosed this after inspecting progress of work at the site, told the Daily Graphic that the arrangement was to help ease the financial burden workers were likely to face as they applied to purchase homes at the trust’s affordable housing project.

He was accompanied by some board members and some management staff of SSNIT.

He said his outfit was happy that after 13 years of construction, the houses would finally be ready for use by workers in December this year.

He assured workers that the board and the management of SSNIT would make it flexible for interested persons to own homes there.

The project is about 75 per cent complete.

Event

During the visit, which was led by the Board Chairman of SSNIT, Dr Kwame Addo-Kufuor, consultants on the project, Messrs Modula Group, assured the team that the facility would be ready for use by December this year.

Dr Addo-Kufuor expressed satisfaction with progress of work and assured Ghanaians of the government’s desire to reduce the housing deficit in the country.

Genesis

The Asokore Mampong Affordable Housing Project was started in 2006 by the government but work on it stalled in 2009 due to lack of funds.

In November 2015, the government handed it over to SSNIT to complete.

The estimated cost of the project is $62.34 million, excluding the amount spent by the government between 2006 and 2008.

When completed, the project is expected to house about 5,000 people.

It consists of 91 blocks of one-bedroom, two-bedroom and three-bedroom flats, with complementary infrastructure and community facilities such as a management block, a tarred internal road network with drains and paved walkways, central sewage treatment plants, among others.

On completion, the project will deliver 1,079 housing units of flats.

The project is being undertaken by 75 contractors, with 16 sub-contractors and eight infrastructure contractors.
