The Sekondi-Takoradi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (STCCI) branch of the National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) has elected a three-member executive committee to oversee the smooth running of the chamber for the next two years.

Mr Stephen Miezan, the Managing Director of Koffman Investments Limited in Takoradi, secured 16 votes to beat Rev. Georgina Filson Nyane, who obtained three of the 19 ballots, to emerge the new chairman of the STCCI.

The positions of vice chairman and treasurer went to Mr Michael Kuta-Dankwa and Madam Charlotte B. Afful, who stood unopposed respectively in the election conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC).

Dr Regina Degadjor, the Women’s Organiser of the GNCCI, who supervised the poll, in a post-election remark explained that there were a lot of opportunities and benefits for members of the organisation and that they should feel proud to belong to the fraternity of businessmen and women.

Rev. Nyane said even though she had been defeated in the election, it was incumbent on all members to see themselves as one entity to be able to fight a common cause in doing business in the country, adding that disunity would jeopardise the fortunes of members.

Petty squabbles

The vice chairman also appealed to members to put behind them all petty squabbles and remain united, since there were lots of benefits to be derived.

Later in an interview with Graphic Business, the newly elected chairman indicated that his immediate priority was to embark on a massive membership drive for the chamber, adding that there was the need to strengthen the association to become a viable one.

‘‘We tend to miss a lot of business opportunities because we are not united. We need to come together to challenge any government policy that is not favourable to us as a group, since bad policies can affect our operations,’’ Mr Miezan noted.

Taxes

He observed that any inimical policy from the government could have an adverse effect on the ability of members to offer employment to the people, saying that even though taxes were meant for the development of the country “we will jaw-jaw with the government to institute realistic tariffs.”
