Mother’s Day is celebrated with diverse views and opinions by different people in different parts of the world. It is not only to thank mothers for their love, care and support but also to honour the multiple ways in which women are a source of strength to their families and communities throughout the world.

The foundation of Mother’s Day, which actually started in the United States of America, is based on the efforts made by Ms Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis.

Following her mother’s death, Anna embarked on a campaign and made a resolution to celebrate the contributions of women.

Mother’s Day is varied and diverse, and, as history has it, the day is celebrated to honour all mothers and show respect and appreciation to our mothers for the hard work they do for the upkeep of their children and the family.

The Daily Graphic joins hands with the entire world to pay tribute to the countless women who have made our lives better and made our dreams come true.

It is our prayer that the Good Lord will direct and guide mothers who are confronted with various challenges to know what action to take and who to contact for support.

There are some mothers who continue to endure hardships and suffering in their marriages for various reasons, just as there are single mothers who have to endure all forms of hardships and work hard to ensure the upkeep of their children.

As the Daily Graphic gathered in an interview with some of these mothers, some sold beverages or did menial jobs to take care of their children and educate them to the university level.

Perhaps it is only appropriate to salute women on this day for the multiple ways they find to nurture their families, their communities, their countries and the larger world.

In doing so, let us not forget that it takes mothers and fathers (even if they are separated) to successfully bring up their children.

On this Mother’s Day, the Daily Graphic calls on both mothers and fathers to live up to their responsibilities to ensure the proper upbringing of children and the entire family.

Over the years, Mother's Day has provided good business with the purchase of cards, flowers, special meals out, jewellery or other gifts to be showered on all mothers and mother figures.

The commercial side apart, the Daily Graphic believes that it is also important for the government and state institutions to continue to provide the necessary support for the large number of mothers in agriculture, industry, corporate institutions, as well as those in small-scale industries and businesses and those who find it extremely difficult to make ends meet.
